“Just tell me where you are,” Mia said from the other side of the phone. Her voice was tense and urgent, which was to be expected. I had disappeared from the pool hall without so much as a word to her, and that had been nearly an hour ago. It made sense that she would be on edge about everything.

“I can’t do that,” I lamented, sighing into the phone as Rascal turned off the road and took us off into what looked like the woods.

“It’s just me, Lucky,” she said. “I’m worried about you.”

“We both know that’s not true,” I said, shaking my head, though she couldn’t see it. “Not about the ‘being worried about me’ part. I totally believe that. But it’s not just you. You’re a detective, Mia. That means you represent the police department, and right now, I don’t need the police department involved in this.”

That was true. At the present moment, Chester was tied to a chair at a kitchen table in the woods and being held against his will. If Mia knew that, she’d have a duty to report it. Things would have to go through the proper channels, and that would take time that we didn’t have. There was a missing little girl, and if we didn’t move quickly, we’d lose her forever. I had just seen the effects of timeliness in a kidnapping back on Sanibel Island. Jessie St. James was a bulldog when it came to staying on track. That helped with finding Nancy before she was killed. Jessie saved a woman’s life by being obsessed with being in a hurry. I would do the same thing if it meant saving this baby, even if it meant being less than open with my girlfriend.

“The fact that you just told me that makes me really worried about what you’re about to do,” Mia said, and I could practically hear the woman biting her lip.

“Yeah. I can understand that,” I muttered. “But don’t worry. I’ll be careful, and I won’t get in too deep with anything. Besides, it’s me. You know that I’m doing this for the right reasons.”

“Of course I do,” Mia said. “But the wrong thing for the right reasons is still the wrong thing, and it’s still illegal.”

“Which is why I’m not telling you about it,” I said.

“You make a good point,” she murmured. “Call me when you’re done with whatever it is?”

“You know I will,” I said.

“Keep your location services turned on. If I don’t hear from you in an hour, I’m going where you are . . . legality be damned,” she said.

“Sounds good,” I said. “But don’t worry. I’ll be careful.”

“You’d better be,” Mia said, and with that, she hung up.

I did the same, putting the phone in my pocket and taking stock of our surroundings. We were in the middle of the woods now. No, these weren’t the woods. Anywhere else, they would have been woods. This was Florida, though, and Florida had swamps. Rows of trees, water covered in moss, and green shrubbery filled nearly every inch of visible space.
